My recent battlefieldtour took me to Liège, where you can find 12 fortifications (build at the end of the 19th century)around the city. During the 'Battle for Liège' (August 1914), the Germans took these forts after heroic fight of the Belgians, but the concrete didn't withstand the heavy german artillery.
One of these forts (Fort Loncin) was hit directly by a 42 cm artillery shell, which exploded in the pouder storage. The whole fort blew up, leaving more than 300 brave soldiers dead under the concrete. If you imagine, what had happened at these places, you will agree, that this must have been hell.
