I took my camera on my morning walk with my dog Palmer. We live only a block from the Boardman River which runs through town and a few more blocks till we get to the Grand Traverse Bay. This morning there were many fisherman out in the bay and on the river as they try to catch the Salmon making their runs up stream. Just down the street from me is the fish harvester. This building puts in grates in the river and force the fish to swim up into the harvester builings holding tanks. When the tanks are full of fish, they run the harvester. The fish are put to sleep then they are sorted. The good meat will be sent to processing plants and the not so good fish meat will be sent to pet food manufacturers. It spares the city the stench of the dying fish. The size alone of the salmon is something to behold! There are both Coho and Chinook that run each fall. The operator let me into the building for a quick tour. He showed me the hook display of the hooks removed from the fish - many are illegal hooks! I even got to see a disgusting eel that had attached itself to a fish. Just disgusting... It makes you think twice about swimming in the bay.
