Growing up Roman Catholic, I was always fascinated with veils and head coverings. As a child, I would take kitchen aprons to my (Catholic and non) friends houses and we'd put them on our heads, pretending we were from a different era and place. I still like to play dress up, love hats and headbands, headdresses, etc. However, in my daily life, the most daring I get is to don one of a few simple hats I own.
I strongly feel that women and girls who choose to wear veils and scarves because of religious belief should be able to wear them freely in the work place and schools. And, of course, I dislike the fact that sometimes women do not have a true choice to remove their veils in certain societies.
I am going to continue with this theme in some of my artwork, but I want to do research on the different locations and uses for such coverings, religious and otherwise, and will continue from a more educated view to contrast the playful imaginings of my youth and the aesthetic appeal of these types of garments.
I'm also thinking of ideas that revolve around protection, illnesses, and historical & current fashion trends.. Whew, a lot to research, but especially this time of year I'm not setting a deadline yet... I have a feeling that it may be a long-term project, anyway.
I'm accepting any ideas or thoughts from anyone, I know people who have worn/wear head coverings for various reasons. And even if you haven't, your thoughts are still important. Thanks everyone.
