American Motors (1954-on)
Financial difficulties forced Nash and Hudson under the presidency of George Romney who concentrated the companies efforts on the promotion of the Rambler marque, retiring the two older marquws in 1957. Bringing back the Nash Ambassador in 1959.
In 1960 the sub compact Metropolitan was retired with the Ambassador becoming a full marque.
AMC's entry into the muscle car market came with the Javelin in 1968 followed by the AMX.
The Rambler name was dropped in 1970 when the Hornet name was revived and the AMC Gremlin sub-compact.
In 1970 AMC's fortunes were aided by the merger with Kaiser Jeep and a deal with Renault in 1979 provided for the production and sale of the Renault R18
