Mercury Automobiles (1939-0n) Mercury is a marque of the Ford motor company, set up by Edsel Ford in 1939 to market entry level luxury cars pitched between the Ford and Lincoln brands. The name Mercury is derived from the Roman "messenger of the gods" rather than the planet. The brand is used in the USA, Mexico, Puerto Rico, the US Virgin Islands and the Middle East. In 1999 the brand was dropped in Canada despite the Grand Marquis still being marketed there. Photo taken from the rear of a 1968 Mercury Cougar (in England, in the rain)
