Maybach -
Founded in 1909 by Wilhelm Maybach who had been technical director of Daimler until 1907.
He founded the new company in 1909 with his son Karl Maybach as director, initially to produce petrol and diesel aircraft and Zeppelin engines, and later engines for rail cars.
Their first experimental car came in 1919 with a production car unveiled at the 1021 Berlin Motor Show. Between 1921-40 the company produced luxury cars as well as heavy duty Diesel engines for ships and the railways. During WWII producing engines for tanks.
After WWII automotive production never restarted and in 1960 was purchased by Daimler Benz.
In 1997 Mercedes presented a Maybach concept at the Tokyo Motorshow and went on to produce two models the Maybach 57 and Maybach 62 at differing lengths. Built alongside the alongside the flagship Mercedes S class. The cars were both ultra exclusive and ultra luxurious with predicted sales figures of 1000 units per year worldwide. But figures have been disappointing and there are now doubts wether Mercedes will continue with the brand.
