The Norton Motorcycle company was founded in 1898 manufacturing parts for the two wheeled trade, By 1902 they had began manufacturing motorcycles with bought in engines. With the first in house engine from 1908
During WW2 Norton supplied the military model 16H and Big 4 motorcyles. A series of Norton Dominator Twins of 500cc, then 600cc, then 650cc and then the 750cc Norton Atlas kept sales buoyant, especially with sales to the USA.
In the late 1960's the Norton Commando appeared, going on to be a best seller.
A merger with BSA-Triumph resulted in (NVT) Norton Villiers Triumph but decline set in and Industrial unrest followed, leading to the downfall of the companies.
In late 2008 Stuart Garner bought the rights of Norton from a US concern, relaunching Norton from a base at Donington Park where it intends to develope the NRV588 racer and a series of road going models.
