I had no idea I was interested in Ground Zero until I stayed in a hotel right on it. These shots are all from the top floor of that hotel. The more I looked at it, in rain, sun and night, the more profound the destruction, thought and rebuilding became to me. I was in Sardinia and watched it all happen from the lobby of a small country hotel there. It all seemed so far away, but I felt so American. Perhaps they should leave a part of the site unrepaired, for those, like me, have to see it to understand the deepness of the tragedy. The Czechs did this in Prague where a part of the City Hall still has the straffing of Hitler's bullets as a reminder of how the world can be. Immedicacy is a great teacher. We United States should not forget this insult to us, this lesson of hate and that we should not do this to others.
