The former ANA Hall in Camp Street, built in 1925, was the Ballarat home of the Australian Natives' Association (ANA) which was founded in 1871.
Friendly societies were first established in Australia during the middle of the Nineteenth Century to provide some of the medical and other essential services that weren't provided by the Government at the time. By 1900, it had 17,000 members, mostly in Victoria.
The ANA was one of the bodies which advocated strongly for federation of the Australian colonies, and the wooden hall formerly on this site was the location for important meetings of the Federation movement.
